New York Medicare Plans
New York, like other states, has an endless combination of Medicare coverage options. There is Original Medicare, Supplements, Advantage Plans and additional coverage options like Part D coverage.
New York Medicare plans open enrollment
You are eligible to enroll in Medicare at 65. This open enrollment period begins three months prior to your birthday and continues for the 3 months after your birthday.
New York has unique Supplement laws. If you are enrolled in Part A or B you can enroll in a Supplement at any time and your age and health will not vary the cost.
Original Medicare leaves behind coinsurance and deductible costs. You may have additional costs as Original Medicare only covers about 80% of outpatient costs.
A Supplement can put a cap on out-of-pocket spending. Another benefit is you can see any doctor that accepts Medicare.

If you were enrolled in Medigap plans C or F before 2019, you could remain enrolled in those plans; however, new beneficiaries cannot enroll in those two plans.
Medicare Advantage Plans
There are a whopping 92 Advantage plans available in New York depending on which county you live in. These are also known as Part C plans. These plans are private insurance plans that offer the same benefits as Original Medicare and have additional benefits. These additional benefits are dental care, vision and prescription drug coverage, In New York there is an enrollment period beginning January 1st through March 31st where you may switch plans or opt into an Original Medicare plan.
Medicare Part D
New York offers 23 Part D plans. These plans provide prescription drug coverage as Original Medicare and Supplements do not offer coverage at the pharmacy. Many beneficiaries who want to limit their out-of-pocket expenses on prescription drugs will enroll in an Advantage Plan or a Part D plan.
