Medigap Plan D
Medicare Supplement Plan D is one of the 10 standardized Medicare Supplement insurance policies. As you know the original idea of these different plans and policies was to pick up where Original Medicare left off.
What does Supplement Plan D cover?
Medigap Plan D is similar to Plan C; however, it does not cover the Part B deductible, nor does it cover the excess charges that some Medicare Doctors may charge.
However, Medigap Plan D does provide coverage for:
- Part A hospital coinsurance and hospital costs for an extra 365 days after Original Medicare benefits are used up
- Part A hospice costs
- Part A deductible
- Part B copayment and coinsurance payment
- Up to 3 pints of blood as needed for a medical procedure
- Skilled nursing facility care costs
- 80% of foreign travel emergency costs up to plan limits
Excess charges are allowable charges doctors can charge you above and beyond what Original Medicare would allow that doctor to bill. Luckily they can only charge 15% more than Medicare allows. Typically your doctor won’t charge those extra fees. If you are worried about excess charges you could look at a Medigap Plan G. If you turned 65 prior to 1/1/2020 you could also look at a Medigap Plan F.
What Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan should I choose?
Medigap Plan D is about in the middle between cost of premium and coverage provided when it comes to the 10 Medicare Supplement plans. Because of recent legal regulations people that were born on or after January 1st 2020 will no longer be allowed to purchase Medicare Supplement Plan F or Medigap Supplement Plan C. So people are turning to the Plan D to get some greater coverage, but not pay the sometimes higher prices of Medicare Plan F and Medicare Plan G.
The right choice comes down to your comfort with a monthly payment vs. potential out of pocket costs. If you are on a very tight budget many seniors choose a Medicare Advantage Plan. Any licensed Medicare agent at Medicare Policy Center is happy to help.
