Louisiana Medicare plans open enrollment
At 65 you are ready to enroll in Medicare. Your open enrollment period starts 3 months prior to your birthday and continues for the 3 months following your birthday. At this time it is also best to enroll in a Medicare Supplement as you cannot be declined for any health conditions you may have.
While you can add a Supplement to your coverage at any time during the year, it is best to do so during open-enrollment to avoid be declined based on any health conditions you may have.
Original Medicare only covers 80% of your out-of-pocket costs. Medicare can also leave behind additional costs from deductibles and coinsurance. This is why many beneficiaries choose to enroll in a Supplement. These can help assist in covering additional out-of-pocket expenses. In fact, Supplements will cap those out-of-pocket expenses.
Another benefit to enrolling in a Supplement is you can visit any doctor that accepts Medicare.
There are 10 plans lettered A-N. Similarly lettered plans provide similar coverage. All coverage is standardized meaning the only difference is the price. If you enrolled in Medigap plans C or F prior to 2019, you will be able to remain enrolled in those plans. New beneficiaries will not be able to enroll in those plans.

Depending on which parish you live in, there are 27 Advantage plans available. These private plans provide all the benefits of original Medicare as well as some additional benefits. These additional benefits are vision care, dental, and prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Part D
If you need coverage for your out-of-pocket prescription costs, you will want to enroll in a Part D plan. Original Medicare and Supplements do not provide prescription coverage, so it you need assistance at the pharmacy you will want to enroll in a Part D plan or an Advantage plan that offers prescription coverage.
