Hawaii Medicare Plans
Hawaii Medicare plans are similar to the rest of the country. They offer Original Medicare plans, Supplements and Advantage plans. A Licensed agent can help you walk through and compare all the options.
Hawaii Medicare plans open enrollment
As with other state, Hawaii residents are able to enroll in Medicare at 65. The enrollment period begins three months prior to your birthday and continues for three months following your birthday. At this time it is also best to apply for a supplement as you cannot be declined for pre-existing health conditions.
A Medicare supplement can help to cover the coinsurance and deductibles that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. This could save you in the long run as Medicare only covers 80% of your outpatient costs. A supplement can also cap your out-of-pocket costs.
A Supplement can also allow you to see any doctor that accepts Medicare.
There are 10 plans in Hawaii. These plans, lettered A-N, all provide a standard coverage. Similarly lettered plans offer the same coverage, but the difference is in the price. This is why it’s best to compare multiple plans in order to determine the best fit for your coverage and budget.
If you were enrolled in a Medigap plan C or F prior to 2019 you will be able to remain on this plan. New beneficiaries will not be able to enroll in these plans.
Medicare Advantage Plans
Depending on what county you live in Hawaii residents have 19 different Advantage plans to choose from. Advantage plans or Part C plans are private plans that can offer Original Medicare coverage as well as provide additional benefits. These additional benefits like dental, vision and prescription drug coverage could be a something you want in your healthcare coverage.
Medicare Part D
If you want assistance with out-of-pocket prescription costs a Part D plan may be a good option. Original Medicare and Supplements don’t have coverage for prescription drugs. There are 24 available Part D plans in Hawaii. An Advantage or Part D plan may be something you need. Ask a licensed Medicare agent about these options.
