California Medicare Plans
Medicare plans in California are supported by the federal government, you may benefit from enrolling in a Supplement or Advantage plan.
California Medicare Plans open enrollment
Beneficiaries are qualified for Medicare at 65 years old. Enrollment last for 6 months; the three months leading up and following your birthday. You may also enroll in Medicare Supplements during this period.
Although you are eligible to enroll in a supplement at any time, it’s best to do so during your enrollment period to avoid being turned down due to pre-existing medical needs.
California’s birthday rule
During the 30 days before your birthday and the 30 days after your birthday you are can switch your supplement plan. You can choose a like plan or one with fewer benefits and your pre-existing health needs will not result in denial.
This does not include Advantage plans.
You are allowed to enroll in Supplement plans at any time, but outside this window and initial enrollment, there is a health screening requirement.
Original Medicare plans can leave deductibles and coinsurance unpaid. Supplements can recoup some or all of these costs.
Plans A-N offer standardized coverage. Plans with matching letters offer the same coverage leaving price as the only variable.

If you have Medigap Plan C or F that was enrolled prior to 2019, you are eligible to keep that plan. New Medicare applicants will not be able to choose those plans.
California Medicare Advantage Plans
Part C Medicare Advantage plans provide all Medicare benefits but can also include additional benefits. These benefits could include dental, vision and prescription coverage.
Only 48 counties in California are eligible to enroll in Part C plans.
Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D plans cover the cost of prescriptions that original Medicare and Supplements don’t cover. There are 30 options available to enroll in.
